It evokes an incredibly powerful feeling of isolation and disconnection, and I particularly love the sharp diagonals and the intensity of those spots of light.
The values of color have a definite sense of a subterranean atmosphere, and really go well with the earth and stone background.
Something about the notion of a music genre generally associated with opulent concert halls and that sort of thing being displaced into such a primitive and discomforting setting really appeals to me. It's as if "playing the violin the wrong way", darkly and in a manner similar to the environment of this painting, has an unique feel of beauty to it that challenges one's conceptions about a musician's relationship to his or her instrument. The violin seems almost organic...
Perhaps that's simply a random association and misguided leap I'm making, but those are still fun.
The only thing that struck me as odd is the broad, parabolic shape of the shoulder area. It just doesn't seem to fit the frame of the rest of the figure.
But yea, this is amazing.
